Aims

This conference aims to bring researchers and practitioners together to share and examine:
  • Issues of disability, spirituality and ageing
  • Theological and ethical issues of ageing, spirituality and disability
Emphasis will be given to:
  • Mental health disabilities common in later life
  • Developmental disabilities and the psychosocial and spiritual effects on the person and their families in later life
  • Issues being faced by veterans in ageing and living with disabilities.

Themes

Major areas for the conference will include:
  • Disabilities and spirituality in later life
  • Mental health disabilities of later life
  • Living with developmental disabilities in later life
  • Ageing veterans facing issues of disabilities and spirituality

Main Speakers

Rev Malcolm Goldsmith: United Kingdom, author of Hearing the Voice of People with Dementia, and In a Strange Land… People with Dementia and the Local Church

NOTE: Malcolm has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. He will therefore not be able to be physically present with us at the conference. Malcolm will deliver his presentation as planned through the medium of digital video.

Dr Jean Hollis: Old Age Psychiatrist, has recently produced a report on mental health issues among older veterans and war widows for the veterans community

Eileen Glass: Has worked with L’Arche for more than thirty years, with people with intellectual disabilities. She is a spiritual director involved in providing training for spiritual directors

Rev Dr Elizabeth MacKinlay: Director of CAPS and Associate Professor, School of Theology, Charles Sturt University

Dr Lorna Hallahan: South Australia PhD in disability and Spirituality

Rev Dr Laurence McNamara: Catholic Priest; Senior Lecturer in Christian Ethics at The Catholic Institute of Sydney and Sydney College of Divinity.

Professor John Swinton: United Kingdom; Professor of Practical Theology and Pastoral Care, University of Aberdeen. Founder, Centre for Study of Spirituality & Health.

Dr Christopher Newell: Associate Professor in Medical Ethics and Disability Studies in the School of Medicine, University of Tasmania.
